New Zealand Mountain Bike Adventure – The Kiwi Riders!

In early October, Erik and I joined 10 other explorers to embark on the TenBridge Mountain Biking Adventure, along the noteworthy Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. We call ourselves: “The Kiwi Riders!” We began our cycling journey at the base of Aoraki / Mt. Cook, the tallest mountain in the country (3,724 meters), and completed our pursuit at the Pacific Ocean. We covered 200 miles over the span of 5 days. With the blessing of phenomenal weather and 2 expert guides, this trip was glorious!

The trail is exceptionally well-maintained and remarkably uncrowded. Preserving access to this pristine landscape required the cooperation of 25 private landowners, who granted legal passage through their properties. As we cycled through a geological wonderland, turquoise alpine lakes reflected snow-capped peaks and vast herds of sheep and cattle grazed across fertile farmlands. We were treated to sweeping views of the Southern Alps and expansive dry grasslands stretching to the horizon.

While there were a few challenging climbs and hairpin turns along the way, much of the route allowed for relaxed cruising through scenery that felt almost impossibly beautiful. Thanks to our knowledgeable guides, we gained a deeper appreciation for New Zealand’s rich diversity of native plants and wildlife. Our guides also shared important insights into the valuable Māori Indigenous heritage.

When we weren’t on our bikes, we took full advantage of the chance to do other activities like stargazing, wine tasting, soaking in wood-fired hot tubs and eating local farm to table cuisine. We hiked through botanical gardens, visited the Clay Cliffs, climbed the Elephant Rocks, dipped in sparkling lakes, went fishing and even sang karaoke! Most importantly, the 12 of us were a great TEAM. We supported each other when accomplishing daily challenges. We laughed together. We got to know each other better. We were unified by collective joy and that is likely the biggest take away from this entire experience.

While traveling, we encountered a vibrant mix of cultures. The traditional perception of New Zealand as chiefly British in character has evolved considerably. Modern New Zealand is a multicultural society shaped by European, Māori, Asian, and Pacific Island influences. Its residents come from many parts of the world, drawn by opportunities for education and business, as well as the chance to build a life in a country known for its quality of life.

In New Zealand, environmental stewardship is a way of life rooted in Kaitiakitanga, the Māori principle of guardianship. Rather than promoting mass tourism, the country embraces regenerative travel, encouraging visitors to honor the Tiaki Promise and tread lightly on the land. From eco-certified guides to cycling routes like the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, tourism is designed to respect, protect, and restore the environment.

We learned a popular mainstream greeting, “Kia Ora.”  We have the Māori people to thank for assimilating this phrase into everyday Kiwi life. What does it mean? Instead of saying hello, farewell or thank you …. they say “Kia Ora” which is literally wishing the essence of life and good health onto another person. This simple term demonstrates the welcoming and wholesome aura that permeates the impressive country of New Zealand.

Stay tuned for an exciting video recap of our trip which is currently in production!
